Kapiti Island lies about 5 km off the west coast of the southern North Island. It is some 30 kilometers north of Wellington city.

Boats leave from Paraparaumu which is about one hour by train from Wellington. The boat trip out to the island takes about 15 minutes, with boats launched from the sandy beach of Paraparaumu with a tractor and hanger.

Visitors to the island must obtain a permit from the Department of Conservation.

50 permits available daily to the Nature Reserve (Rangatira Point) and 18 permits available to the public visiting the North End Crown Land.
